The Lifestyle Supplement section provides both the Patient and Prescriber with a list of vitimins, minerals and other supplements that are available through ICP. This list will continue to grow over time as we learn more about each lifestyle therapy or disease state.

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement (OB/Gyn) - For Women

     Progesterone: The Harmonizing Hormone Progesterone harmonizes the effects of estrogen in the body, controlling and balancing the fluctuating levels of estrogen. Progesterone controls the growth stimulating effects on the lining of the uterus (endometrium) as well as the breasts. When estrogen levels are low, progesterone optimizes their functions as well as being a precursor hormone.

     Progesterone levels that are deficit lead to a relative estrogen dominance, with symptoms such as PMS, fibroids, endometroisis and breast tenderness. Progesterone-estrogen balance is essential in each stage of a women's life from puberty, child bearing, perimenopause and through menopause.

     The harmony of progesterone and estrogen is felt in receptors throughout the body, including brain function, thyroid function, bone strength and stability, breast health, uterine function, and sexuality. Note that even after a hysterectomy the progesterone-estrogn balance is still necessary thoughout the body, and in the case of a history of endometriosis-- progesterone is still needed to control estrogn stimulated proliferation of any remaining endometrial tissue.

     Please do not confuse progesterone with progestins. Progestins are synthetic replacements for progesterone and while they may have some similar effects, they are not fully utilized as progesterone. The Women's Health Initiative Study showed the addition of a progestin actually increased the risk of breast cancer. Progestins cause estrogen dominance symptoms as they block progesterone's harmonizing control over estrogen. Progesterone has a protective role in breast cancer prevention. It is well tolerated and in normal physiologic doses, side effects are uncommon.

     The balance of progesterone and estrogen makes a great difference in quality of life issues for all women.
